Fans of Madeleine L’Engle’s award-winning novel A Wrinkle in Time were thrilled when it was announced last year that the book would be getting a star-studded movie adaptation. Now Entertainment Weekly has released the first official photos from the A Wrinkle in Time movie:
The first look includes images of Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, and Oprah Winfrey in the roles of Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which, respectively. The trio of magical beings help guide 13-year-old Meg Murry (Storm Reid) on an intergalactic adventure across space and time to rescue her scientist father (played by Chris Pine).
Also starring in the film are Deric McCabe as Charles Wallace and Levi Miller as Calvin O’Keefe.
The book, which was optioned for film by Disney and boasts a budget of more than $100 million is directed by Ava DuVernay, whose notable projects include the critically-acclaimed civil rights drama Selma.
DuVernay hopes the film, which features a script from Oscar-winner Jennifer Lee, will inspire young audiences to stand up for themselves and face their fears. DuVernay told Entertainment Weekly:
“I saw so much beauty in it, but also so much meaning… The story of this girl saving the world and being out there in the universe slaying the darkness, it also says a lot about slaying our own dragons.”
Witherspoon, a fan of the original novel, has already received praise for her enchanting performance. DuVernay explains her casting of Witherspoon:
“I was looking for that innocence, that thing Reese plays so well, but also that great power and precision, and funny. The character has so much funny going on, you really need someone who’s proven and who’s done a bit of it all, and that’s Reese.”
